Works towards delivery of the Howdon Depot project begun with development of the design based around the Howdon Depot’s requirements. Our design team, in collaboration with the client, produced both the outline & detailed design for the substation which is required to provide power for the overhead line equipment, signaling & switching and domestic depot power.
The Substation was translated from design, to build, at our Orion Park facility in Crewe. Careful consideration and planning from our engineers saw the manufacture of the substation come together ahead of programme, enabling thorough testing and commissioning of the substation.

Installation works proceeded onsite in preparation for the substation being commissioned into service:
- Interconnecting cabling terminated into equipment
- earth rods bore-holed into the ground with the earth tape connecting each rod together,
- 11kV power supply brought from Percy Main Substation into the Howdon Depot Substation and energised
in July 2020, following the completion of the depot track bonding and the installation of the overhead line equipment PSP undertook Depot Section Proving which finalised testing of the overhead line equipment within the depot. PSP carried out short circuit testing to ensure the protection settings within the Howdon depot substation equipment worked within the defined parameters, which was successfully achieved.

Works included, remove of temp Track Bonds, Final Connection on impedance bonds and final track bonding to connect the Howdon Depot to the main line. Carried out full inspection of track bonding within the depot.
PSP have worked collaboratively to enable the existing SCADA system to incorporate control of the Howdon Depot substation and associated equipment. W/C 20th the existing Nexus servers at the South Gosforth ECR were updated with the new database that would enable the control of the Howdon Depot Substation. This was successfully integrated and left operational.
PSP also updated the south Gosforth ECR mimic panel, this included installing refurbished hand rest switches into the existing mimic tile panel, new indicator LED’s and the root-map. These works were completed successfully on time and without risk.
On 31st of July 2020 the Howdon Depot Substation was officially handed over to the client, Nexus.
PSP have thoroughly enjoyed managing this specific project and being a part of the bigger task at hand, which was the new Howdon Depot in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. We would like to take the opportunity to thanks Nexus and Buckingham Group for the opportunity.
